Crighton Rowan Goodwill, known to his friends as 'Critter', was born in Durban and grew up in a musical family. His father, Clive Goodwill, is a renowned Rock and Disco musician in South Africa, with talents both as a recording Lead Vocalist and Session singer and Keyboard player. It wasn't long before Crighton followed in his father's footsteps. At the age of four he started to play the piano, a natural choice of instrument given his father's influence. By the age of eight Crighton developed a love for singing.
Throughout his primary school career, he played the lead in all musical productions. Capturing the attention of his music teacher, Mrs Margret McKinlay at Houghton Primary School, through her efforts he was sent for an audition at the Drakensberg Boys Choir. He was immediately accepted and soon earned a solid reputation as Solo Soprano. This highly disciplined classical environment enabled him to develop his piano and vocal abilities to the fullest.
This is where he met his musical partner and close friend, Loyiso Bala. A few highlights whilst attending the Drakensberg Boys Choir School include performing a vocal solo for the celebrated Nelson Mandela. He extended his audience while touring Europe and performed before Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. His natural singing ability was recognised with the Soprano Soloist Award in 1995 (The schools highest music award). Following this, he continued to focus on his singing and was involved in a number of successful K-TV music videos and albums. His involvement with K-TV required him to tour the country becoming somewhat of a 'teenage celebrity' amongst the youth. However, it was during this time that Crighton realised his true calling.
Setting his sights on the Music Industry, he soon developed an artistic fixation with the creation of music through Sound Engineering, Programming, Writing and Production. With his past experience of singing and recording of albums, he came to the conclusion that 'The Studio' was an environment more conducive to creative discovery which could allow him to develop and explore his true passion and honour his life purpose.
After matriculating in 1998, he was fortunate enough to start as an Engineering Apprentice at CSR Studios, now known as Electromode. This is a well-established independent Label which has enjoyed much success through the release of many well known South African artists. This gave him a good grounding in the technical side of studio work, under his Mentor, George Vardas. As his skills and knowledge expanded, he was given an opportunity to work as an Engineer and Programmer with prominent musicians such as Lebo M, Vusi Mahlasela, Granny Smith, Jonny Clegg, Just Jinger, Hi-5, Fahrenheit, Mbongeni Ngema, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, TKZ Family, Danny K, Ed Jordan and many more... He went on to Produce and write songs with the likes of Kabelo, TK, Loyiso, Speedy, Wade Engelbrect.
After four years at CSR Records, Crighton now felt equipped to expand his horizons by exploring music in Advertising and Jingle writing. Opportunities came knocking and with his acquired skills and experience he enjoyed success with many Programmes on television. He created Theme music for the Series Channel, K-TV, Deloitte & Touché, Summit, Sunday Times.
Although enjoying the challenges of the advertising world, Crighton felt the need to collaborate with artists and consequently started to focus on the Production of albums. He developed a relationship with Brian O'Shea from Musketeer Records, a Veteran Music Producer who has launched acts internationally such as Seether.
Crighton joined Musketeer and this lead to his involvement with Pop Idols: to this date he has been the prominent Producer for all the winning artists such as NKD, Jacques Terre'Blanche, Heinz, Ayanda, Anke, Karen, Melanie and Ezra. The Musical Genres of these Artists varied from Pop to Jazz to Classical thus broadening Crighton's scope as a Producer.
During this time he wrote the Big Brother hit song 'Cabin Fever' that went on to win a SAMA Award. The winning song on Anke's album called 'Silver Lining' was co-Produced, Programmed and Engineered by Crighton and it too won a SAMA Award.
While Crighton's Production career was increasingly becoming his main focus, he was constantly sought after for Advertising Jingles. He has therefore simultaneously formed a partnership with Paul Shafer of 'Earworm' which caters for the musical needs of Advertising Agencies. Earworm Audio is considered to be one of the more cutting edge in the market, especially with respect to Animation, with clients such as Ford, Cadbury's, News Café, Mr Min, FNB, Super Sport, Jet, SABC, SA Tourism, Big Brother Africa, Survivor and many more.
He recently re-established his working relationship with Loyiso, renewing a long-time partnership. Having worked on Loyiso's first ever single at CSR Studios, it was inevitable that these musical titans would join forces again.
They teamed up to Produce Loyiso's Album, 'Blow Your Mind'. After so many years of experience and success in both their fields of expertise, this was to be an album which would set the musical world alight. Crighton co-wrote many of the songs with Loyiso while also Programming, Engineering and Producing the tracks.
Such was the success of the album that it received Five SAMA Nominations. Crighton was nominated for 'Best Engineer' and 'Best Producer of the Year 2008'. This album has subsequently won Loyiso the SAMA Award for 'Best RnB Album of the Year', while Crighton won the award for 'Best Producer'. Despite his relative youth, Crighton (28) was honoured with this award joining the ranks of the greats like Lawrence Majitsa, Joe Arthur, Victor Masondo and Wessel van Rensburg.
Crighton and Loyiso have since solidified their relationship through a partnership in a Studio. This co-ownership allows them to access each others talents at will, thus giving them the necessary freedom to take on an exceedingly wide variety of work. Their vision and goal encompasses the holistic development and empowerment of local up-and-coming musicians. This has already been achieved through collaboration with now known artists such as Tasha Baxter and Obita.
Crighton's vision is to establish a Studio Facility of International standards, which will provide a platform for young South African Producers, Singers and Writers.
'I want to create a melting pot of unique influences and genres which will eventually be filtered into the International arena. South Africa has phenomenal talent which needs to be displayed to the world, and I want to be the one to make that happen.'
